Four of them have already been announced.
The Swedish conglomerate Embracer Group acquired Middle-Earth Enterprises in mid-August 2022, along with exclusive rights to works in the Lord of the Rings universe, including games. And in a recent financial report, the company said that five projects based on the franchise will be released over the next two years. Third-party studios are responsible for their development.
Alas, there was no big surprise from Embracer Group’s statement. Four of the five games mentioned have already been announced. There is only one project left, which will be presented in the near future. The Swedish conglomerate did not share details about him.
Third-party teams are responsible for creating games. This is generally not strange, given that the Embracer Group acquired the rights to adapt The Lord of the Rings only six months ago. If the company entrusted some franchise projects to internal studios, then they definitely will not be released within two years. And the Swedish conglomerate in the financial report mentioned new items that will appear before April 2025.
What games did the Embracer Group talk about?
- The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is the main game in the universe so far announced. This is a stealth action game about the adventures of Gollum, showing a little-known part of the character’s history.
- The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is a survival simulator in the depths of Moria with dwarves, construction and resource extraction.
- The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is a mobile action-RPG “with your favorite characters” from Electronic Arts.
- An unnamed project by Weta Workshop, the studio responsible for the visual effects in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
