They adhered to the principle of showing the world as the protagonist sees it.
Nacon Publishing and Daedalic Entertainment continue to share fresh material about The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Recently, the developers have published a video diary in which they told about the creation of Middle-earth in the game.
The developers adhered to the principle: “This is how Gollum sees the world around him.” The authors tried to please three audiences at the same time: fans of the film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, fans of Tolkien’s books and fans of video games. They drew inspiration from classic fantasy and wanted to make The Lord of the Rings: Gollum look like a storybook illustration.
In terms of graphics, Daedalic relied on its own brand identity, developed during the production of past games. But at the same time, the developers tried to take into account the works that have already been created in the Lord of the Rings universe. The authors called their approach “stylized realism” or “fairy-tale realism”. They took many references directly from nature.
Users in the final version of the game will see a distorted version of Middle-earth through the eyes of Gollum. This applies not only to the environment, but also to the characters. They look friendly or dangerous depending on the protagonist’s point of view. However, the developers also took into account the important nuances prescribed by Tolkien and implemented them in their project.
